ENTERPRISE YMCA Taekwondo School

Four of our Enterprise YMCA Taekwondo School students were invited to compete at the XI State Games of America, scheduled for August 1st, 2015, in Omaha, Nebraska. Their invitations were the result of their success at the XXXIII Alabama State Games, held on June 13th, 2015 at the Ozark Civic Center. They all earned medals in their age and skill divisions - Michael Dreilinger (gold), Logan Stewmon (silver), William Wallace (silver), and Grason Wallace (silver) competed against nearly 200 martial artists from around the country - medalists from their own home state games. They are the only four Taekwondo martial artists from Alabama competing in the national 2015 SGA which have been held every other year since 1999 and this year will attract over 15,000 athletes from 47 states and the District of Columbia.

Taekwondo made its first appearance as a demonstration sport at the 1988 Summer Olympics. It became a medal sport at the 2000 Summer Olympic Games, and has been an Olympic sport since. Taekwondo made its debut in the Alabama State Games in the late 80s. In recent years it has become a premier sport in the annual Alabama State Games, making it one of the must attend events for all taekwondo athletes. Competition is held in Forms, Point Sparring, Olympic Sparring, and Board Breaking. Rules are almost identical to our ATF tournaments. 2015 was the first of three years the Games will be held in the Wiregrass making a perfect opportunity for our students to participate.

In 2015 all four of our YMCA competitors won at least one gold medal and are now Alabama State Games Champions! Congratulations to Grason Wallace, William Wallace, Logan Stewmon (two time gold medalist), and Michael Dreilinger. In 2016 our ten competitors won 24 medals - 10 of them gold going to 2016 Alabama State Games Champions Michael Dreilinger (3 Gold); Ethan Jones (2 Gold); William Wallace (2 Gold); Logan Stewmon; Garrett Bogart; and Chad Leuci.
